Tenkara Guides

Discover Tenkara guides Paul Gaskell and John Pearson are the recognised authorities on Japanese tenkara techniques in the UK.

John and Paul maintain continual contact with elite Japanese anglers on top of their existing top-level European fly fishing teaching and practice. Along with annual research trips to Japan, this combination results in an unmatched resource for learning authentic and effective on-stream skills through one-to-one and group tuition. No other western guides have attained a comparable level of understanding or achievement of tenkara and they are the only guides to have been formally approved by both Masami Sakakibara and Dr. Hisao Ishigaki.

Enquiries for one-to-one tuition are handled by John via email at jp@discovertenkara.co.uk

Group Tuition Day enquiries will be answered by Paul on pg@discovertenkara.co.uk

The professionals listed below all have extensive experience in guiding, teaching, practicing and demonstrating river fly fishing in Europe – and also offer quality tuition on fishing western tactics using tenkara tackle.

Angus Campbell

Angus is a full time angling coach and guide specialising in Tenkara fly fishing on the River Windrush and small chalk streams in the Cotswolds.

“I have to admit from the first time I heard about Tenkara fly fishing, I had to have my own kit. As a child in rural Africa we had to make our own bamboo whips to catch fish from our local stream. Only a lucky few friends had access to modern reels and equipment but this did not stop us from catching plenty of fish. You have to admire the simplicity of the Tenkara rod to appreciate its true value”.

“A TenkaraCenteUK rod should be first fishing kit in any persons hand when you embark on your mission to become an avert fly fisherman. This is where you get the true feeling of a fly rod working, while you gently manipulate the line and fly in front of a wild brown trout, just feet in front of you. The delicacy of the kit allows you to feel every touch and take. While playing a frisky trout just adds to the excitement and the bend of the rod, not to mention the heart stopping. Landing your fish can be a trick, but highly challenging and rewarding, considering how light the tackle is. I highly recommend this traditional Japanese fly fishing technique for both young and the young at heart”.
