Our kebari range is divided into four types based on their design and function:

Mendori Sakasa Kebari (Mendori = hen, Sakasa = reverse)

This style has become the iconic tenkara fly in the west - so much so that we have seen many naive attempts to copy the style by putting reverse hackles on tried and tested western patterns. The snag is, a reverse hackle has a specific function – and the generally extremely sparse/soft hackles on most British wet flies (which are already perfect for their own specific applications) do not perform that particular job quite as well.
The sakasa style kebari offer great mobility in the feather fibres while dead drifting (especially downstream) or when actively pulsed/manipulated in slower water. They also work well in medium or moderately fast flows whether fished upstream, across or downstream..

All our soft hackles are hen pheasant in keeping with traditional Japanese patterns.

Mendori Sakasa Kebari with black thread body.

A firm favourite of many tenkara anglers this kebari is reminiscent of a pattern used by Dr Ishigaki who, although more famous for his stiff hackled kebari, often uses a soft hackle for its extra mobility when manipulated.

Mendori Sakasa Kebari with peacock collar and cream thread body.

This pattern has become more widely known as the Takayama style sakasa kebari but there are so many western variants the pattern has almost taken on a life of its own. The cream coloured Takayama was the first traditional tenkara fly Paul really gained confidence with when learning tenkara. You can read more about this pattern and its origins in the Discover Tenkara Kebari eBook “Discovering Kebari”.

This pattern bears some resemblance to the Okumikawa style sakasa kebari described by Yoshikazu Fujioka. Masami Sakakibara also ties a very similar looking kebari and this was the first tenkara fly that John had success with and it continues to rank amongst both Paul and John's favourite kebari patterns.
