The Otaki is our new premium rod. It is also the first to be developed in partnership with Discover Tenkara. Balance, lightness and a smooth progressive action with excellent recovery are immediately obvious when you cast the Otaki. The ability of a rod to return to a straight position without continuing to "wobble" is where so many non-Japanese tenkara rods fail. Those rods that avoid "wobble" often have tips that are too stiff which "over recover" and cause a strange kick-back sensation to the caster. How does the Otaki fare on this point? Neil, a regular client of Discover Tenkara guided days who has fished with the pre-launch production rods nails it here:
"I forget I am holding the rod, I just think about where the fly should land - and it does".
The matt charcoal blank has woven carbon reinforcement at each joint for resilience without sacrificing weight. The handle is designed to be held in multiple positions so that you can modify the "working length" of the rod in front of your hand. For fishing at maximum range, the Otaki handle includes an insulated EVA "pommel" grip which is comfortable in summer and much warmer to hold in winter than a metal end cap!
Suitable for light lines (#2 and above) it will readily handle lines up to #4.5 and trout in the 2.5 to 3lb bracket.
The Otaki 375 comes with a fabric rod bag and protective clear polycarbonate tube with the option to buy a high quality woven carbon rod tube separately.
* The action of this rod is designed by Discover Tenkara to feel familiar to a western fly fisher while maintaining the best properties of a Japanese Tenkara rod. With light loading the flex is focused toward the tip (like a 7:3) but with increasing load the flex transfers further down the blank (more reminiscent of a 6:4).
** stated weight excludes end plugs. This rod handle is designed by Discover Tenkara for optimum balance in the hand of the angler and (although it may be technically heavier on the scales when collapsed) it feels much lighter than comparable models when in use.
Don’t worry if you break a rod tip during use. The Tenkara Centre range is covered by our outstanding commitment to replace the first tip Free Of Charge. Any further replacement tips are available from just £10, so you can fish with confidence. Find out more on our replacement tips page
